KUALA LUMPUR: The 21st ?Asean Transport Ministers Meeting (ATMM) concluded today with the signing of the ninth package of commitments on air transport services.

The protocol was signed between the 10 Asean members and it was one of the commitments under the Asean Framework Agreement to intensify efforts on establishment of an Asean Single Aviation Market (ASAM).

?Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, in his joint statement earlier today, said his counterparts were satisfied with the progress made in implementing key measures specified in the ASAM roadmap.

He said the signing of the protocol for air transport services would facilitate its implementation to further liberalise transport ancillary services in the region.

Further key economic elements? for liberalisation, Liow noted, would be further discussed with the Asean members as the needs arise for a more competitive and resilient Asean.

Liow also said the Asean bloc has called for the strengthening and enhancement of road safety in the region and the adoption of the Asean Regional Road Safety Strategy would strengthen the region’s resolve to reduce road fatalities.

It was learned that the safety strategy will be providing a framework for road strategies at the regional level which can be used to reduce road fatalities in Asean member states.

The framework will also be in accordance with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 to 2020.
