GEORGE TOWN : Tanjong member of parliament Ng Wei Aik said he would not resign as an elected representative if parliamentary reforms are enacted early next year.
This was following a challenge by Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia towards two DAP MPs to resign after the former was told to resign as Speaker for failing to present the reforms to the Prime Minister.
Ng said Pandikar was “appointed” whereas his position as a lawmaker was “elected by the rakyat” and he will not resign until his duties are fullfilled per se.
“I will not resign as an MP. I was elected by the rakyat in the general election and I have to perform my duties as an elected representative. “His (Pandikar’s) position is appointed and not elected.
“All we (Ng and Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng) did was urge Pandikar for the parliamentary reforms,” he told reporters today.
On Dec 5, Pandikar told Ng and Lim to resign or vacate their seats if the first phase of the parliamentary reforms are carried out early next year during the Parliament session.
Pandikar said failure to resign will result the duo being unable to speak under Standing Order 35 and they will be considered as MPs with no honour.
Under Standing Order 35, an MP who wishes to speak in the house must first stand up and be given permission by the Speaker.-nst
