MALACCA: Two men were arrested by the police for robbing a foreigner while pretending to be police officers.

State police chief Datuk Ramli Din said they were arrested on Saturday at 5.30pm while robbing a Bangladesh national.

“On April 16, two policemen on patrols from the Malim police station spotted two men checking a Bangladeshi man’s identity card.

“Upon seeing the police, they panicked and they ran away with the Bangladeshi’s bag containing money and a handphone,” he said.

Police arrested the duo and further checks found that they were both locals, 28 and 32-years-old respectively.

“The suspects’ modus operandi was impersonating as a policeman and demanding for work permits or other-related documents from foreign nationals, before fleeing with their belongings.

“Another modus operandi was brandishing knife or parang and threatening the victims to hand over their belongings.

“The 28-year-old had a previous drug record,” he added. Police have identified 10 robbing cases committed by the duo involving foreign workers here in Malaysia including from Nepal and Vietnam.

“Robbery was among the concerns raised by the factory workers to the police during a recent dialogue held with them,” he added.

The suspects were remanded for seven days until April 23.

The case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating civil servants and 395 of the Penal Code for armed gang robbery.-nst
