
KOTA KINABALU: A 25-year-old labourer is the second person here to be charged with supporting the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
Yohyo Achoi was accused of committing the offence at his native Kampung Kota Bungan at the northern Kota Belud district between May 8 and July 19 this year.
He was alleged to have committed the offence via two Facebook accounts under the name of Yohyo Irranun Peace AlBorneozy and Yohyo Illanun AlSaba Malizia.
The offence, under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, provides for life imprisonment or a fine, and forfeiture of any property used or intended to be used.
No plea was taken from Achoi, who was unrepresented, after he was produced before magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun.
The court fixed Oct 4 for mention and ordered the accused to be detained further as no bail was offered. Deputy public prosecutor Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali said they would apply for the case to be transferred to the High Court.
On Tuesday, businessman Mohd Firdaus Asren Saputra B M S Asren, 34, was charged with five offences for supporting the IS.
In Penang, a 37-year-old tourist guide who was charged with managing property for an Abu Sayyaf militant group member, has been given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA).
Balik Pulau Magistrate Nur Azzuin Abdul Moati granted the discharge to Lisoffuan Abdullah after the prosecution applied for the DNAA.
No reason was given for the application by DPP Shafiq Mahadi.
The case was originally fixed for mention yesterday pending a transfer to the High Court.
Lisoffuan, who was not represented, was alleged to have allowed Muhammad Joraimee Awang Raimee to use his bank account in Bayan Lepas for deposit and withdrawal purposes from Oct 21 last year to April 29.-thestar
